Creating our magazine cover

Today we completed the majority of our magazine advert, we still need to add embellishments such as the QR code that will bring you to our music video, and information on where you can listen to/download the album.

We chose to add more images to our digipak front cover design, as when receiving feedback, our peers told us that they would like to see the same design for both products. We were reluctant to use the exact same as we felt it showed less creativity, therefore, we chose to compromise by adapting/enhancing our design before using it for our magazine cover.

We're extremely happy with our magazine advert as we feel that we've managed to represent Lorde as an artist (by using her typical font and replicating the background of one of her music adverts) whilst incorporating our own creative ideas by taking original photographs and creating an amalgamation of pictures in order to portray our chosen theme of differing personalities.

Creating our digipak: day two

Once myself and Keeley were happy with our digipak front cover, it was time to begin adding our other photos and creating the remainder of the product.

We are happy with the photographs we have taken and the way in which we have edited our photos to look dark and sombre by decreasing the saturation and increasing the contrast of them; we edited them in this way in order to portray the sombre theme that runs throughout Lorde's melodrama album and her music in general.

However, we felt that our digipak doesn't fully portray our theme of multiple personalities strongly enough, therefore, we began to consider what could make each picture stand out as an individual character. We thought of the idea of editing our character's hair on each picture, as well as changing eye and lip colour in order to really empathise our film and ensure that our digipak relates to our music video as well as resembling Lorde's artistic style.

After we had edited our photographs and were happy with the result, we began positioning them onto our digipak.

There's still many changes to be made such as adding spines, and also correcting the album name to "Melodrama" as we accidentally used the name of our music video song instead. However, we are much happier with our product now that our photographs have been edited further and feel that our digipak now represents our theme much more clearly. We have also added the album song names to our digipak and placed them onto a faded out photograph in order to ensure that the song names stand out.

Creating our digipak: day one...

Today we began creating our digipak, we played around with a few editing software's such as Picmonkey and Be Funky before we found one that allowed us to create the idea that we wanted for our front cover; an image made up of lots of diamond-shaped segments of a face. We played around with the editing tools and made ourselves accustomed to the software before attempting to create our product.

Our first attempts...

We began creating our collage for our digipak front cover freehand before later considering using a template, it was difficult to create an image we were happy with without a template as the photographs looked messy and unstructured, however, our first attempts allowed us to play with the tools and get accustomed to the software, it also allowed us to see the standard that we would be happy going forward with regarding our digipak.

Our first prototype...

This was the first creation that we were actually happy with, but we knew it still needed to be improved, we needed to add text and we also weren't entirely happy with the image of the purple lips, we felt that it didn't fit as effectively as the other images did.

We then added text to our product in order to play around with the positioning to see where the text would look effective. We were happy with this placement and the colour of the text, however, we are considering changing the font when it comes to editing again. This font looks fairly basic and we need the font to really grip our audience so that they'll be more likely to engage with our album. We are also considering using Lorde's typical font that she uses across many of her album/single covers:

By using Lorde's typically used font, we can relate back to our artist whilst being individual by creating our own album art with original images.

Finally, we decided to change the image of the purple lips to this one of half a bow, we are lots happier with this image in the arrangement and feel that we made the right choice changing it. Overall, we are happy with our first day of editing for our digipak front cover and are looking forward to playing around with the text next time and seeing if there are other ways in which we can further enhance our product.
